The trump administration on Monday shelved a broad import ban on cotton and tomato products in Xinjiang, China, while announcing stricter bans on products from five specific entities, Reuters reported.

Kenneth cuccinelli, Acting Deputy Secretary of homeland security, told reporters on a conference call that the government is conducting more legal analysis of the import ban across the region. Last week, customs officials at the border, Reuters and cotton, had told them more about the ban on tomatoes and cotton.

CBP Deputy Commissioner mark Morgan said on Monday that the agency was continuing to investigate orders across the region. Two people familiar with the discussions within the trump administration said that key officials, including Treasury Secretary Steven mnuchin, U.S. trade representative Robert Letzer and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Purdue, raised concerns about the wide range of orders and their impact on the supply chain.

China has agreed to buy more U.S. cotton under the first phase of the trade agreement between the two countries, and a ban on imports from China's dominant cotton producing areas could put the deal at risk.

Cuccinelli said more research was needed on import bans across the region, rather than trade issues. "We want to make sure that when we do get challenged - we assume that we will be challenged legally - we will have the upper hand," he said.

The Department of Homeland Security said the United States is preparing to ban imports of hair products, clothing, cotton and computer parts from five other Xinjiang entities, continuing to increase pressure on Xinjiang, China.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington referred to past statements by the Chinese foreign ministry, opposing the accusation of forced labor in Xinjiang and criticizing the United States for interfering in China's internal affairs in Xinjiang.
