242 Clause

The 242nd paragraph of the report of the working group on China's accession to the WTO (special restrictions on Textiles) was signed when China entered the WTO, that is, the 242 paragraph is mainly suitable for textiles.

The US's restrictions on China are also 242 paragraphs.


The 242 paragraph stipulates that if a member of the WTO considers that the textiles and clothing products originally made in China covered by the agreement on textiles and clothing, since the date of entry into force of the WTO agreement, the market can be disrupted and threaten to impede the orderly development of trade in these products. The member may request consultations with China in order to reduce or avoid such market disruption.

Consultations will take place within 30 days after receipt of the request for consultations.

Within 90 days after receipt of such a request, the two parties will reach agreement on mutually satisfactory solutions.

If there is no satisfactory solution within 90 days of consultations, consultations will continue.
