The Lubbock organic cotton exchange, based in Dezhou, reported on Thursday that output of 2007-08 organic cotton increased by 152%, mainly due to the expansion of global retailer demand.

The report of 2008 organic cotton agriculture and fiber released by the organic cotton exchange said that organic cotton production does not use pesticides and fertilizers, and does not use genetically modified seeds. Its output has reached about 0.55% of global cotton output.

2007-08 output of organic cotton is 668581 packs, up from 265517 packages of last year.

The US Department of Agriculture reported in September that 2007-08 world cotton production was 120 million 355 thousand packs (480 pounds).

In 2007-08, 60% of organic cotton output, or 241858 packages from the known machine cotton program expanded, and 40% or 161238 packages came from newly identified and previously unknown plans.

The largest 6 organic cotton producing countries in 2007-08 were India, Syria, Turkey, China, Tanzania and the United States.
